Job Description
Do you want to build a platform that powers global AI-driven language experiences? You will join the Azure AI Translation and Language team, developing scalable infrastructure that enables reliable, high-performance translation and language services used across Microsoft including infrastructure supporting AI inference and data processing workflows. Our systems support real-time communication for millions of users worldwide.
As a Software Engineer II, you will design and build components of large-scale distributed systems that support Azure AI translation and language services. You’ll work with engineers and partner teams to deliver reliable, scalable platform capabilities and improve service quality. This role provides opportunities to deepen expertise in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and service engineering in a flexible hybrid environment.

Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain components of distributed systems supporting Azure AI translation and language services.
- Own development and delivery of features or service components end-to-end, including design, implementation, testing, and deployment.
- Contribute to improving service reliability, scalability, and performance through code and system enhancements.
- Participate in service operations, including monitoring, debugging, and incident response.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and partner teams to deliver platform capabilities.
- Write clear technical specifications for features, including design, testing, and telemetry considerations.
- Continuously improve engineering practices, code quality, and system maintainability.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of software development experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or Rust
OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience building or maintaining distributed systems, cloud services, or backend systems.
- Experience with designing, implementing, and testing service components or APIs.
- Experience working with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure) or microservices architectures.
- Experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems or infrastructure services.
- Experience with system monitoring, debugging, or service reliability practices.
- Experience working with data pipelines, service orchestration, or storage systems.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams.
- Programming experience in Python.
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
