Senior Platform Engineer - Rust
Job Description
ABOUT CHRONICLE LABS
Chronicle Labs is building infrastructure for testing, evaluating, and operating AI agents.
Our platform captures activity across systems, reconstructs realistic operating environments, and enables teams to replay workflows and validate agent behavior before deployment.
The platform spans event ingestion, data storage and querying, isolated execution environments, backend APIs, developer tooling, and customer-facing applications.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a Senior Platform Engineer with deep Rust experience to help design, build, and operate the systems at the core of Chronicle's platform.
You will work across application architecture, data infrastructure, developer experience, and production operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between designing a reliable service, debugging a concurrency issue, improving a deployment process, and evaluating a new storage architecture.
This is primarily a software engineering role with meaningful production ownership — not a traditional DevOps or infrastructure-only position. You will spend most of your time building backend and distributed systems while also taking responsibility for how those systems are deployed, observed, scaled, and maintained.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Design and evolve core backend and platform services in Rust.
Build reliable systems for ingesting, processing, storing, querying, and replaying event data.
Develop APIs, streaming services, background jobs, and orchestration systems.
Improve the correctness, security, and isolation of a multi-tenant platform.
Design clear abstractions that allow the platform to evolve across different storage and execution technologies.
Own services through their full lifecycle, from architecture and implementation to deployment and production operation.
Improve automated testing, continuous integration, deployment safety, and release processes.
Strengthen observability, failure recovery, capacity planning, and incident readiness.
Build and operate isolated execution environments for agent testing and evaluation workloads.
Improve developer tooling, local development environments, and ephemeral testing environments.
Maintain reliable contracts between Rust backend services and TypeScript applications.
Reduce architectural duplication and simplify systems as the product and team grow.
Mentor other engineers and help establish strong standards for Rust, reliability, and platform engineering.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent depth of experience building production systems.
Strong expertise in Rust, including ownership, lifetimes, traits, generics, error handling, and performance analysis.
Production experience with asynchronous Rust, concurrency, cancellation, resource management, and backpressure.
Experience designing and operating backend services, HTTP APIs, streaming systems, webhooks, or background processing systems.
Strong understanding of relational databases, including schema design, migrations, transactions, query performance, and connection management.
Experience building modular systems with well-defined interfaces, reusable components, and comprehensive tests.
Practical experience with containers, continuous integration, cloud deployments, and secrets management.
A strong understanding of production reliability, observability, failure recovery, and debugging.
Comfort working across backend services, infrastructure, and TypeScript applications when necessary.
Strong technical judgment and the ability to improve complex systems incrementally without disrupting production.
Clear written and verbal communication, particularly when documenting architectural decisions and operational procedures.
BONUS EXPERIENCE
Experience in any of the following areas is helpful, but not required:
Distributed event processing or streaming platforms.
PostgreSQL at scale, including tenant isolation and performance optimization.
OpenTelemetry, Sentry, distributed tracing, or production metrics infrastructure.
Authentication, billing, or integration heavy SaaS platforms.
Property-based testing, benchmarking, and performance-sensitive Rust.
Analytical data systems, columnar storage, graph databases, or event stores.
Apache Arrow, Parquet, DataFusion, or similar analytical technologies.
Isolated container, sandbox, or workload execution platforms.
Infrastructure for AI agents, model evaluation, or tool execution.
Rust SDK development, WebAssembly, or Python bindings.
Platforms such as Fly.io, Vercel, Doppler, GitHub Actions, or comparable alternatives.
INITIAL AREAS OF FOCUS
During your first several months, you will likely focus on:
Making development, testing, and ephemeral environments easier to create and operate.
Expanding automated coverage across databases, APIs, integration flows, and isolated runtimes.
Improving deployment safety, configuration management, and operational documentation.
Strengthening observability and preparing event-processing systems for increased scale.
Helping define and operationalize the platform's long-term data and storage architecture.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
A successful engineer in this role will make Chronicle's platform easier to understand, safer to change, and more reliable to operate.
You will help the team move faster without sacrificing correctness, while establishing the technical foundations needed to support increasingly complex workloads and larger customers.
